WASHINGTON -- Mayor Vincent Gray wants to ban foam food containers in the nation's capitol. Gray submitted his proposal to the D.C. Council as part of a package of bills to protect the environment and support healthy lifestyles.

The legislation would ban polystyrene in food containers ranging from clamshell containers and cups to plates and egg cartons. It would apply to all businesses that use polystyrene to sell or provide food for consumption on or off the premises.

Several cities including New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago are considering similar measures.
