Namco Bandai Opens Social Gaming Development Studio In Vancouver

VANCOUVER -- Namco Bandai Holdings Inc. has opened a studio here that will develop mobile and online games tailored for North American players. The studio, which was planned about a year ago, officially opened in August and is staffed by about 30 people.

Namco Bandai Studios president Hajime Nakatani told the Vancouver Sun that the Pacific Northwest city beat out major Canadian cities like Montreal and Toronto because of its sizable "cluster" of digital artists and engineers.

Until the global economy turned bad in 2008, Vancouver was fast on its way to becoming a leading hub for games development. Over the past few years, however, a number of Vancouver-based studios have moved east to Quebec and Ontario due to better tax breaks offered in those provinces, the Vancouver Sun reported. In later years, large mainstream developers have all but disappeared from the Vancouver scene, leaving a rise of independent developers in its wake.
