WASHINGTON -- Candymakers and baked goods manufacturers suffered a close defeat in a 206-221 vote in the House of Representatives for adoption of a sugar reform amendment in the 2013 farm bill. Part of an already contentious policy bill, the reform amendment sought to end "Depression Era policies" that keep the price of sugar artificially inflated.

The amendment was consistent with bipartisan legislation introduced earlier this year as the Sugar Reform Act (H.R. 693/S.345) that would have rolled back the sugar policy's most costly, restrictive and market-distorting provisions enacted as part of the 2008 farm bill.

In a statement following the defeat, the Coalition for Sugar Reform said: "We applaud the undaunted leadership of Reps. Joe Pitts (R-PA) and Danny Davis (D-IL), Bob Goodlatte (R‐VA) and Earl Blumenauer (D‐OR) for championing this amendment, and Reps. Jim Moran (D‐VA), Jeb Hensarling (R‐TX), Charlie Dent (R-PA), Chuck Fleischmann (R‐TN), Jackie Speier (D‐CA) and many others for consistently speaking out in strong support of reform. Without their tireless efforts, a vote this close would not have been possible.
