LAS VEGAS — Learning opportunities and profit-oriented technical developments will be in the spotlight at the Amusement and Music Operators Association International Expo, set for September 10 to 12 at the Las Vegas (NV) Convention Center. The event, co-located with Fun Expo, will feature a host of educational seminars and ample time to review new products and developments during its Wednesday-through-Friday run.
This year, AMOA also is celebrating its 60th anniversary. It was founded on January 21, 1948, by 14 leading operators who saw the need to establish an association on their industry’s behalf to enable lobbying and other group-minded actions. Originally called the Music Operators Association (MOA), it grew and thrived through the 1970s, at which point the booming amusements industry brought the “A” to the name as this equipment became an integral part of operators’ businesses.
Events related to the exposition get underway on Tuesday, September 9, with show registration open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The sixth annual Coin-Op Cares golf outing at the Silverstone Golf Course will have a shotgun start at 1 p.m. that day, following luncheon on the course. Golfers will have a chance to win $25,000 in a hole-in-one contest, and will re-ceive goodie bags for participating. Shuttle transportation between the course and the Las Vegas Hilton is available.

The AMOA Expo officially opens on Wednesday, September 10, with a 9:30 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony; exhibits will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The All Industry Gala Reception will be staged from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday’s educational sessions include “A Shot at Redemption for Route Operators: Making It Simple and Easy,” set for 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., which will be led by Amusement Entertainment Management head and VT columnist Frank Seninsky. The program will review integrating redemption equipment into a route, and how to properly balance play prices and awards to encourage earnings.
Later in the day, a seminar titled “Get Wired With Your Own Member Company Website” will be hosted from 2 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. by AMOA past-president Jim Pietrangelo of WebcampOne LLC. He will explain AMOA’s most recent member benefit program, which assists operators in creating company websites for a minimal cost. Members in good standing pay an initial development fee and annual renewal/maintenance fee of $100 for an AMOA-run website; the development fee will be waived for the first 50 firms to sign up for this seminar.
Thursday, September 11, starts off with the AMOA Breakfast and Membership Meeting from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Registration and show-floor hours will be the same as on Wednesday, and there will be three optional seminars.
During AMOA’s annual membership meeting, outgoing president Lloyd Williamson, Williamson’s Amusement Amusements Inc. (Winona, MN), will review association highlights during his term, while incoming president Russ Mawdsley, Russell Hall Inc. (Holyoak, MA), will discuss the year ahead. Additional business will include legislative updates, the election of new directors and ratification of bylaws.
AMOA will also announce various award winners during the meeting. These will include victors of the Coin-Op Cares golf tournament and the first Ray Shroyer Scholarship recipient, along with the winners of AMOA’s eight annual innovator awards.
Regarding seminars, a full-day workshop introducing the basics of LCD monitor repair will be broken into two parts: the first runs from 8:30 a.m. to noon, and the second from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Technical guru Ray Holdren will lead the concentrated session, which will cover topics from LCD theory and troubleshooting to microprocessor fundamentals.
From 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., PeopleWorks’ Kara McClure will discuss “What You Need To Know and Do to Stay Relevant With Your Changing Customer Demographic.” McClure will review the competitive “entertainment dollars” marketplace, and consider how generation-specific values and interests play a part in consumer spending.
“Life After the Smoking Bans: Filling the Void with Stepped-Up League Promotions” is set for 2 p.m. to 3:15 p.m., and will be hosted by a panel of pool- and dart-league experts from the National Dart Association and the Valley National 8-Ball League Association. With smoking bans greatly impacting operators’ profitability, this seminar will suggest creative ways to leverage league play and attract new players.
Registration will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, September 12; trade show floor hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A seminar titled “Dos and Don’ts of Configuring Networked Equipment” will run from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 p.m., and will be moderated by San Westgate of Williams Enterprises Inc. Technical representatives from AMI Entertainment, Ecast and TouchTunes will join other experts in giving advice on setting up networked equipment to save time and money.
