OAKVILLE, ON, Canada -- For its newest product, Reunion Island Coffee sourced beans from the emerging coffee-growing region of Flores in Indonesia. With a tropical climate and rich volcanic soil, Flores shares similar growing conditions with sister islands Sumatra and Java.
The new coffee, called Flores Green Dragon, is roasted to a medium dark Viennese color, which Reunion Island said develops its dried fruit and sweet chocolate notes, along with a slightly floral aroma. It's available in single-cup pods, portion packages and whole bean.
The Canadian roaster observed that while the island itself is still underdeveloped, the coffee shows "remarkable clarity and maturity," which are the signs of a well-grown crop. "It's clean, balanced and sweet, yet still has that distinctive heaviness we've come to expect from Indonesian coffees," said Reunion Island director of coffee development Adam Pesce.
Organic Flores Green Dragon is named after one of the island's most famous inhabitants, the Komodo dragon. By sourcing the coffee from a Rainforest Alliance Certified farm, Reunion Island is supporting efforts to maintain a healthy environment for the giant lizards and other protected species.
