NEW YORK CITY -- VeriFone Systems Inc. has launched a mobile payments app that lets New Yorkers pay for their cab rides with their smartphones.

Called Way2ride, the free app is available for iOS and Android smartphones. It enables passengers to pre-load payment information and preferred tip amounts. Once inside the cab, they can pay at any time with a tap of their phones. Digital receipts are stored in the app, and are accessible at Way2ride.com.

Way2ride is VeriFone's first commercial deployment of its Zoosh sound-based technology, which uses the speakers and microphones of smartphones to securely exchange encrypted data between devices through the cloud. The technology allows app developers to deliver single-tap functionality in non-NFC smartphones, alongside their NFC-based solutions.

Following the Big Apple launch, VeriFone plans to expand Way2ride acceptance throughout its network of more than 70,000 cashless payment-enabled taxis worldwide.
