OKLAHOMA CITY, OK -- Responding to a measure that increases Oklahoma's tax on vending machines by 300%, the Oklahoma Vendors Association is urging the state's operators to submit written comments and attend a public hearing organized by the Oklahoma Tax Commission.

National Automatic Merchandising Association senior vice-president for government affairs Ned Monroe explained that the state Legislature enacted a tax law earlier this year that, among other things, increases the levy on coin-operated equipment 300%. READ STORY

The Oklahoma Tax Commission now must revise its tax rules to conform to the provisions of the new law, and a public comment period is required whenever the commission changes those rules.

"It is important that vending operators continue to express their concern with this excessive increase," Monroe emphasized. "In this economy, such a tax increase is harming small businesses. The tax commission needs to hear our concerns. We also encourage all vending operators in Oklahoma to contact their state legislators to try and have this tax repealed when the legislature reconvenes on Feb. 7."

Written comments should be sent to the Oklahoma Tax Commission, Tax Policy and Research Division at 2501 North Lincoln Boulevard, Oklahoma City, OK 73194. They will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 5.

The public hearing will be held the following day, Jan. 6, at 10 a.m. in the hearing room at the Oklahoma Tax Commission.

For information on attending the hearing, contact Mary Lou Monaghan at NAMA's southern office at mmonaghan@vending.org.
