ReunionOAKVILLE, ON, Canada -- Reunion Island Coffee said it is no longer selling traditional paper cups. Instead, it will exclusively supply cups made from a combination of paper and compostable PLA (polylactic acid) that replaces the plastic coating on the inside of paper coffee cups.

The specialty coffee roaster explained that the PLA used in the cups decomposes into carbon dioxide and water, in a controlled composting environment, in fewer than 90 days.

The move is the latest in Reunion Island's ongoing sustainability efforts. Its single-cup coffee pods are 100% compostable, and the company makes it easy for OCS operators to help workplaces to dispose of them responsibly by supplying a BioBag primarily made of cornstarch that completely biodegrades along with its contents. Reunion Island's roasting facility is powered with 100% "green" electricity generated by wind farms and other eco-friendly methods.
