National Bulk Vendors Association Executive Committee Announces Major Changes To Trade Show Moving Forward

LAS VEGAS — During a meeting of the National Bulk Vendors Association executive committee held here last month, a number of key decisions were made that will impact the association as a whole, as well as its annual trade show and convention. The 2007 NBVA show will be held here at Caesar's Palace from April 19 to 21.

Chief among the committee’s decisions was the elimination of the $75 nonmember day pass to the annual trade show. During the upcoming three-day event, nonmembers will be charged a flat fee of $150 to access the exhibit floor.

According to NBVA officials, the move was instituted to encourage nonmembers to join the association; given the choice of paying a $150 flat fee to attend the show or a $100 membership fee (the association’s lowest dues category), more nonmembers will choose to join the organization.

NBVA notes that membership not only provides access to the convention floor, but also to the annual show banquet. Members receive the organization’s newsletter throughout the year, bulletin mailings and the NBVA coupon book, which offers discounts on merchandise and equipment from participating suppliers and manufacturers. Show personnel will be able to provide detailed information on NBVA membership requirements and fees to interested nonmembers.

The executive committee also implemented changes to the show schedule. Seminars, which in the past occurred only on Friday, will now be spread between Thursday and Friday. The popular video presentation will take place on Saturday morning before the general meeting and election of officers.

The rescheduling was enacted, said the executive committee, to provide operators with more time on the show floor and to encourage show attendance on Thursday.

The organization said that its discount coupon book (started as an experiment last year) will continue through 2007 with little change. The association plans to distribute the booklets at the trade show in Las Vegas, and will mail them to members in good standing who do not attend the event.

The Operator Bull Session, held during the convention to provide operators with a chance to air grievances and exchange views on the industry, will for the first time be open to suppliers and manufacturers, and has been simply renamed the Bull Session.

The NBVA committee felt that expanding participation in this event would foster greater communication in the industry and provide instant feedback to operators.

Additionally, the NBVA plans to provide its newsletters by email, but will continue to produce and mail hard copies. According to officials, the organization has considered reducing or eliminating printed copies of the publication in favor of email, though that decision has not officially been made. The association urges members who have not registered their email addresses with the organization to do so.

The executive committee has decided to expand its Web presence to include additional member services. While the NBVA website will continue to offer information about “blue-sky” operators, it will in the future have a members-only section, which will include newsletters and other important information on topics such as lead and toy safety.

It was noted during the meeting that since the association has switched from a fiscal year to a calendar year, dues and invoices should be sent in early January 2007, and must be paid by March 15 for a member to remain in good standing.
