NBTY Acquires Balance Bar

RONKONKOMA, NY -- NBTY Inc., a seller of vitamins and food supplements based here, said it has acquired Balance Bar Co. to increase its offerings in the sports nutrition category.
NBTY, owned by Washington, DC-based private-equity firm Carlyle Group LP, bought Balance Bar from Brynwood Partners, another private-equity firm. Financial terms were not disclosed.
NBTY owns sports brands including Pure Protein bars and powders and MET-Rx bars, powders, drinks and vitamins.
Valhalla, NY-based Balance Bar was founded in 1992 and acquired by Brynwood from Kraft Foods in 2009.
