Beverage Sales In Taverns Recover: Study

NORWALK, CT -- A new study published by the Beverage Information Group suggests that on-premise consumption of alcoholic beverages rebounded somewhat in 2010 over the depressed levels seen in 2009.

But according to "The Cheers On-Premise BARometer Handbook," sales of adult beverages in U.S. taverns and restaurants still have not returned to 2008 levels -- the last year before the full onset of the global economic recession.

The new handbook said bars are seeing a recovery in part because most state governments have finally repealed so-called "blue laws" that previously banned liquor sales on Sunday. Blue laws, inspired by fundamentalist religious fervor against alcohol consumption, date back to the Prohibition Era of the 1920s.

Some strengthening of the overall U.S. economy may also be a factor in increasing on-premise consumption of alcohol, the study said, although the latest national unemployment figures ticked up to 9.8% as America continues its longest period of high unemployment since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

The study is available here.
