CARSON CITY, NV -- Snacks that contain trans fat will no longer be allowed in school vending machines if a Nevada bill sponsored by 10 Democratic lawmakers passes.
On March 26, a Senate committee heard SB230, which bans trans fat from schools vending machines, school stores, fundraisers and other activities, but exempts school lunches. No action was taken by the lawmakers at the session.
Items that would be banned include those made with vegetable shortening, margarine or partially hydrogenated oils, unless the manufacturer's label says the product contains zero grams of trans fat.
Trans fat bans have become commonplace in schools and municipalities across the nation because they have shown to raise levels of harmful cholesterol and decrease levels of healthy cholesterol.
