LAS VEGAS -- The National Bulk Vendors Association concluded in late March its 63rd annual convention and trade show, which it termed a success. It was the third NBVA show to collocate with the Amusement Expo, held at the Las Vegas (NV) Convention Center from March 20 through 22.

The NBVA drew some 250 participants, down from last year's 260. There were 18 exhibitors in 42 booths, compared with 23 in 49 booths the year prior. According to one association official, "if the show fell marginally short in attendees, it was more than made up for in enthusiasm of those who did show up."

While the show did not break records any for visitors or exhibitors, it did produce a few new association members. "The show did as well as last year," said NBVA president Steven Schechner, Capital Vending (Florence, AL). "And if you can hold your own in this environment, you're doing great. And there were few complaints from exhibitors or operators. I had one exhibitor tell me that even if the show would have closed after the first day, they still would have made money."

During the show, the association held its annual meeting to elect new board members. They are Mark Brooks, Quality Candy Services (Hampton, GA.); Scott Ausmus, National Entertainment Network Inc. (Broomfield CO); John Lander, Concord Confections Inc.; R.J. Brooks, Phoenix Vending Inc. (Brighton, MI); and John Honeycutt, John Honeycutt Inc. (Clearfield, UT).

The NBVA also appointed two committee chairmen. George Wells, Mid-Maine Vending (Winterport, Maine), is membership chairman and Brian Kovens, A&A Global Industries, is product safety and compliance chairman.

During the annual NBVA on March 21, the association presented several awards.

Best 1" Capsuled Product » Brand Vending for Sqwishland
Best 2" Capsuled Product » Cardinal Distributing Co.'s Special Forces.
Best Sticker » A&A Global Industries for its NFL series
Best Tattoo » Flatline Corp. for Pink & Black
Best Candy/Gum » Concord Confections for its 1080-ct. gum
Best Bulk Vending Machine » Beaver Machine Corp.
Best Crane Mix » A&A Global Industries for its plush
Best Booth Décor » The Northwestern Corp.

The association also honored an exceptional vending operator. Matt Miller of Marz Vending (Kingwood, TX) was NBVA's Most Innovative Operator of 2012.

Amusement Expo is jointly sponsored by the Amusement and Music Operators Association and the American Amusement Machine Association, which have consolidated their separate trade shows.

"Everything ran smoothly this year," Schechner said. "Fantastically smoothly, in fact. The AMOA and AAMA really have made us feel welcome. And the mood among vending operators was upbeat. I'm really looking forward to implementing my team's ideas at the 2014 show."

The 2014 Amusement Expo and collocated NBVA show will be held from March 26 to 28, Wednesday through Friday, again at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The National Bulk Vendors Association, founded in 1950, maintains an office at 1202 E. Maryland Ave. Ste. 1K, Phoenix, AZ, 85014. Information on NBVA programs and activities may be had by calling (888) NBVA-USA [828-2872].
