Illinois Gaming Board Will Consider 24-Hour Casino Operations

SPRINGFIELD, IL -- The Illinois Gaming Board will hear arguments this week about the pros and cons of allowing casinos to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Right now, casinos can operate a maximum 22 hours a day.

The Illinois Casino Gaming Association said it's looking to level the playing field now that location-based video gaming can operate around clock in places like truck stops. Casino revenues have been on the decline since 2007 when a smoking ban went into affect. See story in the Chicago Tribune.

Gambling opponents contend that nonstop betting would create a hazardous situation for gambling addicts.

The hearing is set for Sept. 19, but a decision will likely not be made then.

Illinois's operator-run video poker program went live on Sept. 7, 2012. At the end of August, operators had placed 9,417 video gaming terminals. Last month, players waged $370 million.

Separately, Gov. Pat Quinn recently reappointed Aaron Jaffe to serve as chairman of the Illinois Gaming Board, which oversees riverboat casinos and video gambling. Quinn says it's critical to have strong oversight of gambling. Jaffe has been chairman since 2005.
