WAWA, PA -- Wawa customers hooked on the c-store chain's fresh-brewed coffee can now enjoy it at home with a new line of portion packs compatible with Green Mountain Coffee Roasters' Keurig single-cup system.
The new portion packs of Wawa's private-label original and 100% Colombian coffees are now available in all of Wawa's 604 stores in Delaware, Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia. New varieties will be added in early 2013.
"We are pleased to launch these convenient new single-serve coffee containers so our customers can enjoy Wawa's signature flavors in the comfort of their homes," said Mendy Meriwether, category manager for Wawa. "A tremendous amount of development has gone into ensuring the cup that customers brew at home is as perfect as the cup our customers buy at any Wawa location."
Wawa reportedly sells 195 million cups of coffee in its stores each year. It was a coffee-on-the-go pioneer in 1975 when it began offering freshly brewed coffee to its customers, first through pour-over machines, and later through plumbed-in, five-burner Bunn-o-Matic brewers.
In the 1990s, the c-store chain remodeled and expanded its hot beverage area. The addition of the 20-fl.oz. cup and, later, the Big 24, fueled its coffee program. In 2010, Wawa embarked on a chain-wide makeover, transforming the coffee areas in all stores with new graphics and replacing glass pots with thermal brewers.
In 2012, Wawa stores rolled out a full-service specialty beverage area where customers use touchscreen displays to custom-order lattes, hot chocolates and more prepared by the store's foodservice personnel.
