Sonic 20th Anniversary

TOKYO -- Sega Corp. plans to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its mascot in style with a series of special events around the world, the details of which will be released throughout the year. Sonic the Hedgehog turns 20 on June 23.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a videogame character and the protagonist of the Sonic videogame series released by Sega, as well as in eponymous comics, cartoons and a feature film.

The first Sonic game was released on June 23, 1991. It provided Sega with a mascot to rival Nintendo's flagship character Mario. Since then, Sonic has become one of the world's best-known videogame characters, with more than 70 million copies in the series sold.

Artist Naoto Oshima, designer Hirokazu Yasuhara and programmer Yuji Naka are credited with the creation of the character, a blue 15-year-old anthropomorphic hedgehog that can run at supersonic speeds and curl into a ball to attack enemies. This is a major part of the gameplay of the series.

In 2005, Sonic was among the first game character inductees into the Walk of Game, alongside Mario and Link. The Walk of Game is a year-round attraction honoring the icons and pioneers of the videogame industry. It's located inside Metreon, San Francisco's hip entertainment and shopping center.

Recently in the coin-op sector, Sega Amusements USA introduced the Sonic All-Stars games line. The line leaders include an air hockey table and a basketball game featuring bright white cabinets accented with blue stars and images of Sega's iconic cartoon hedgehog The sports games bring a new variety to the already diverse Sega coin-op lineup. | SEE STORY
