HIAWATHA, IA -- There can be little doubt by now that the tablet format has proven its value as a business tool. Lightweight, easy to carry and to use while standing up, it is quickly finding its way into all manner of businesses. However, there is a problem: many of today's popular tablets are not designed to withstand the rigors of use on a route.
Enter MobileDemand, an Iowa-based company that offers a line of ruggedized tablets specifically designed for the rough and tumble of operation in the field. The company has seen its tablet PCs used everywhere from the Red Bull Nascar team through beer distributors and the hospitality industry to warehouses.
The firm describes its latest offering, the xTablet T7000, as a UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC). The handheld computer offers a lightweight alternative to both the daintier iPad-type devices and to larger netbooks and notebooks. Measuring only 8.8" W. x 5.8" H. x 1.55" D., the unit weighs just 2.5 lbs. It boasts a 7" high-resolution (1024 x 600 or 768) all-light-readable touchscreen display.
Powering the ruggedized T7000 is a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor with 2GB of RAM and a 60GB hard drive. The little machine is capable of running Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP, to accommodate familiar Windows-based applications, and it supports standard wireless communications.
The T7000 features a built-in numeric keyboard and color camera. An optional QWERTY keyboard attachment is available. Other options include a GPS function to provide real-time status and location stamping; a small, high-performance imager/barcode scanner module that can read linear, stacked linear and matrix bar codes, and a magnetic-stripe reader.
"Many of the companies we are working with are talking about replacing their handhelds for in-store, warehouse and route delivery applications and laptops for field sales," said MobileDemand's president, Matt Miller. "They want to cut development, deployment, training and maintenance costs by standardizing on one device. The form factor, functionality, power and performance of the rugged xTablet T7000 mini tablet PC makes it possible."
While MobileDemand's product line, including the new T7000, doesn't employ the capacitive screens used in Apple's iPad to permit the "pinch" and "swipe" actions, the touchscreen offers a smooth, intuitive interface. And, like all MobileDemand products, the T7000 is waterproof, dust-proof and shock resistant.
