Federal Guidelines Are Planned For Vending Machines In Schools

WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration is working on extending school nutrition standards beyond the cafeteria to vending machines and school stores. The National Automatic Merchandising Association said it expects to learn from the U.S. Department of Agriculture within the next few weeks about the requirements the proposed guidelines will impose on school vending services.

Details of the proposed regulations have not been released, but health advocates and food and beverage industry officials are speculating that the rules will be similar to those for the new federal school lunch program, which limit sugar, salt and fat content.

The Department of Agriculture in January unveiled new nutrition rules for school meals aimed at improving child nutrition and combating childhood obesity. The rules represent the first major change to school meal standards in more than 15 years. | READ MORE
