EAST LANSING, MI -- Dr. Michael L. Kasavana is being honored by Michigan State University for his effective service as the institution's faculty athletic representative. He is the National Automatic Merchandising Association-endowed professor at MSU's School of Hospitality Business at the university's Broad College of Business.

Kasavana is being recognized by the National Football Foundation and Fidelity Investments for his "commitment to the scholar-athletic ideal and the leadership-building qualities of intercollegiate football." The honor is also on behalf of all MSU faculty for the success of Kirk Cousins, who received a NFF National Scholar-Athlete Award presented by Fidelity Investments last December. Cousins was the starting quarterback for the MSU Spartans from 2009 to 2011.

"Dr. Kasavana is one of the most valued leaders of our industry and we can't thank him enough for all his work helping to push our industry forward," said Dan Mathews, NAMA executive vice-president and chief operating officer. "Last year he was named NAMA Industry Person of the Year, and we offer our congratulations to him for this special honor."

Kasavana coined the term "V-Commerce" to summarize the ongoing fusion of vending and networked interactive points of sale. His teaching and research efforts are focused on information technology and transaction settlement systems for self-service and full-service applications. In addition to his academic responsibilities, he serves as MSU's faculty athletic representative to the Big 10, CCHA and NCAA conferences, and chairs the university's Athletic Council.
