CALABASAS, CA -- Atari game designer Ed Logg, who helped design such seminal 1980s coin-operated videogames as Asteroids, Centipede and Gauntlet, will be honored next year with a Pioneer Award by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences.

The 2012 award will be presented by Mark Cerny, president of Cerny Games, at the 15th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards on Feb. 9 at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas.

The AIAS said Logg's creations were "brilliant and game-changing" and that they "continue to shape the way that modern games are designed today ... he has inspired generation after generation of game designers with his vision."

The AIAS Pioneer Award honors early game creators who blazed the trail for today's $40 billion global videogame industry.

Logg, 63, originally studied math and computer science at Berkeley and Stanford before accepting a post at Control Data Corp. He soon took a job with Atari, located just across the street, and by 1978 began putting his imprint on a string of hits.

Logg will be the third recipient of the Pioneer Award. Bill Budge, a programmer and designer whose claims to fame are Raster Blaster (1981) and Pinball Construction Set (1983), both released originally for the Apple II, was last year's winner.
