Coke Consolidated Kicks Off 'Lots of Choices. Calories Optional' Campaign In SC Hospitals

CHARLESTON, SC -- Coca-Cola Consolidated has partnered with the Medical University of South Carolina to inform consumers in South Carolina hospitals that they have "Lots of Choices. Calories Optional."

In addition to traditional regular and zero-calorie soft drinks, hospital visitors and staff will be able to choose from juices, vitamin-fortified waters, regular and zero-calorie sports drinks, teas and purified water. Beverage equipment will feature the "Lots of Choices. Calories Optional" messaging and "health risks" informing consumers about zero or low-calorie beverage options.

Through Coca-Cola's new Clear on Calories initiative, Coke Consolidated is providing calorie information on the front of every package. Plans are under way for the bottler to partner with hospitals to promote nutrition education and physical activity programs for hospital employees.

"It is important for all consumers in the healthcare setting and beyond to understand how each food and beverage they consume fits into a healthy, balanced lifestyle," said Dr. Susan Johnson, director of health promotion at MUSC. "We don't want to promote any particular choice, but rather educate consumers and provide incentives through access, pricing and marketing to make the healthy choice the easy choice."

Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated is the nation's largest independent Coca-Cola bottler. It produces and distributes Coca-Cola products in franchise sales territories across the Southeast.
