NYC COMPTROLLER QUESTIONS CITY'S NEW BEVERAGE VENDING CONTRACT

NEW YORK CITY , Comptroller William C. Thompson is examining the vending deal that gives Snapple exclusive rights to sell beverages in city schools and other municipal properties, local news sources are reporting. Snapple Beverage Group, a division of Cadbury Schweppes, last month signed an unprecedented agreement under which "Snapple" products are now the exclusive beverage sold in vending machines in the City of New York, with the initial focus on the city's school system. The exclusive five-year vending and marketing pact, announced by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, guarantees the city $106 million in cash and $60 million in marketing and promotional value. Snapple will be responsible for all the installation, operation, maintenance and fulfillment of all vending machines. Thompson's inquiry is seeking a description of the process in which Snapple won the contract, which is being questioned by beverage industry experts and local vending operators.
