Coke Kicks Off Recycling Program On National Mall

WASHINGTON, DC -- Coca-Cola is helping to keep the National Mall in the nation's capital "clean and green" by donating 320 recycling bins, along with recycling trailers for special events.

The initiative comes one year after Coke announced its investment of more than $1 million in the National Park System, in partnership with the National Parks Service, National Park Foundation and the Trust for the National Mall, to promote sustainability at the tourist hotspot.

The bins will be a permanent addition to the National Mall, dotting the landscape stretching from the Capitol Reflecting Pool to the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. Coca-Cola is also donating two recycling trailers and 400 additional bins to be used during special events.

Washington, DC, has been the launch pad for other Coca-Cola sustainability initiatives, including its deployment of the first-ever climate-friendly beverage coolers on Capitol Hill in 2009. The nation's capital is also home to Coca-Cola's largest hybrid delivery truck fleet. In addition, the beverage giant has worked to develop recycling programs with Washington area sports teams, facilities like the Verizon Center and Nationals Park, as well as Keep America Beautiful, which supports RecycleMania, a competition and grant program to help colleges and universities develop recycling programs.

Coca-Cola's broader efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its packaged beverages includes its 2009 opening of the world's largest bottle-to-bottle recycling facility in Spartanburg, SC, capable of producing 100 million pounds of recycled PET plastic each year. The same year, Coca-Cola launched PlantBottle packaging, which uses up to 30% plant-based materials.
