LOS ANGELES -- Weymouth Distributing Co. Inc. said it is closing its doors after a 55-year run as one the leading vending machine distributors on the West Coast.

Laura Weymouth, the distributorship's sole owner, recently suffered a heart attack and underwent triple bypass and valve-replacement surgery. She said her doctors have advised her to reduce her stress to lower the risk of another heart attack.

"This truly is a life or death decision for me," Weymouth said. "I want to thank our fiercely loyal customers and our suppliers for all their love and support over the years. Without them, we would never have lasted as long as we have."

Her distributorship will close out its equipment and parts inventory during the remainder of the year and will not reopen in 2012. The Los Angeles-based operation sold and serviced new and used equipment, and represented Automatic Products, AMS and Dixie-Narco, along with SandenVendo, Fastcorp, Royal Vendors, Coinco and MEI, among other lines.

"Due to the current economic situation in the U.S., and California in particular, we have been keeping minimal inventory on hand, so finishing out that inventory will not take long," said general manager Bill Watson. Watson and operations manager George Nye will remain at the company through January to complete residual business obligations.

The distributorship was founded by Albert Weymouth, Laura's father, in 1930. He started with a line of Rowe cigarette venders and added coin phonographs and amusement games in 1939. A decade later, Weymouth became the first distributor of Automatic Products (which is now part of Crane Merchandising Systems). He incorporated the firm in 1957 and it became Weymouth Distributing Co. Inc. He died in 1996 and left the Los Angeles distributorship to Laura, who has been at its helm since.

Bill Watson can be reached at Weymouth's offices at (213) 748-5181, ext. 104, or on his cellphone (213) 305-7221.
