NORTHFIELD, IL -- Kraft Foods Group Inc. plans to sell Maxwell House and Gevalia portion packs that are compatible with Green Mountain Coffee Roasters' Keurig single-serve brewers.

Kraft spokesperson Basil Maglaris told Reuters that the cups, set to roll out in the U.S. within the next several months, are not licensed. This means Green Mountain will not receive any royalties from their sale.

Certain Green Mountain patents related to the design of its K-Cups expired in September, opening doors for competitors to bring their own compatible solutions to market. Among the first were the Kroger's and Safeway supermarket chains. | SEE STORY

Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, Folgers and Millstone coffees are all available in Keurig K-Cups, licensed by Green Mountain.

Kraft also manufactures the rival single-serve Tassimo system for office coffee service operators and consumers. Tassimo brewers work with Kraft's proprietary T Discs, which are imprinted with barcodes that the brewer reads to adjust water temperature, volume, flow rate and time for optimum brew results.

In addition to the wave of new portion packs, Green Mountain faces increased competition in the single-cup brewer arena, including coffee giant Starbucks, which launched its Verismo machine last month. | SEE STORY
