ATLANTA -- Some 20 bulk vending operators and suppliers came together on June 7 and 8 at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel Atlanta Airport for National Bulk Vendors Association's first roadshow. The group was there to learn, exchange ideas and network. While small in size, the program's concept was meaningful to the bulk vending segment.

"It was a success because it was well organized, the speakers knew their stuff and participants learned a lot," said NBVA president Steve Schechner of Capital Vending and Distributing (Florence, AL).

Unlike traditional bulk vending trade events that are largely product and sales oriented, the roadshow was conceived as a symposium with a focus on nuts-and-bolts strategies for increasing sales, expanding routes and receiving up to date information on the latest trends across a wide variety of topics.

Among the presenters at the show were Northwestern Corp.'s Keith Roberts, who demonstrated the process of upgrading coin mechs on his company's popular 60 and 80 series venders to higher valuations. A&A Global Industries' Gerry Clothier and Brand Vending Products' Dax Logue provided briefings on merchandise trends. John Landers of Concord Confections offered a rundown on ball gum developments.

Other presenters contributing to the two-day conference included crane specialist Jim Chapman of Coast to Coast Entertainment; capsule product expert Shawn Dumphy of SSM Vending; charity operator Brian Goode; and NBVA administrator Amy Contre. Vending Times' Hank Schlesinger discussed management strategies for bulk vending operations.

"This event was free to members and plans are currently in the works to look at Atlantic City for the next roadshow," Shechner said. "As we move forward, we expect more in the way of attendance and topics."

Shechner said the roadshow program is part of a renewed effort by the NBVA to add value to the organization for its operator and manufacturer members. For additional information on upcoming roadshow events and the NBVA, contact the association at (888) 628-2872 or go to nbva.org.
