BRUSSELS, Belgium -- The European Vending Association has completed a report detailing key figures and trends of the continent's vending market. The 2010-2011 report includes individual profiles of 21 countries and an analysis of the industry's performance from 2003 through 2011, along with a general European report.

EVA explained that gathering data from an industry run by some 10,000 operators throughout Europe is no small task. For 2008 and 2009, the international market research firm Datamonitor teamed up with the association, thanks to the financial contributions of 15 members; the result was the first pan-European survey of the vending market and its customers. The 2008 study that resulted includes an in-depth analysis of consumer preferences and feedback on the vending market, as part of a thorough market report. It covers a wide area, with 21 country profiles and a general European overview.

Building on this accomplishment and the 2009 Key Performance Indicators (KPI) update, EVA resolved to continue the venture on its own. It designated an experienced partner to carry out the 2010-2011 market survey: David Hoskin, who has been the EVA president for many years, and who produces the annual vending census for the Automatic Vending Association (representing the United Kingdom and Ireland), has spent months talking to vending experts in each market, building models and refining a solid methodology and regularly checking the data under the leadership of the EVA Vending Data Committee chairman Jan Marck Vrijlandt of Selecta (Cham, Switzerland). The outcome is a European report, built on updates to the 21 individual country profiles, which provides 10 key sets of figures and insights into the vending market.

These include a total base of 3.8 million machines in the field, and an analysis of how this base is broken down among participating countries. Almost 80% of the base is distributed among the six leading countries.

The report also gives a detailed breakdown of hot, cold and snack machines and the proportion of freestanding and tabletop equipment. At present, this is about 50-50 and shows a clear trend towards more tabletop designs to serve downsizing workplaces.

The vending industry's turnover for the area covered by the report is around €11 billion, EVA reported. The ratio of workers to hot-drink machines ranges from 36 to 140 workers per machine in the six leading national markets.

The report also details the ratio of hot drink to snack machines, which indicates substantial growth opportunities; enumerates the top five operators in Europe and their joint market share; depicts the degree of consolidation in each of the 21 market areas; and offers insights based on all these figures.

Each individual country profile lists the number of machines, consumer preferences (e.g. types of coffee) and sales trends. It also lists total vends (i.e., the number of transactions and price trends).

Details on the report and pricing for the entire study and components are online at vending-europe.eu/en/market-studies. A summary is available at no charge to full, direct and supporting members of EVA. For nonmembers, the entire report can be purchased for €2,000. The European summary can be purchased for €500 and an individual country profile for €250.
