CHARLOTTE, NC -- Compass Group USA and sister company Bon Appetit Management Co. said they will only serve their customers yogurt made from milk produced by cows not treated with the rBGH artificial growth hormone.
The move, prompted by concerns about the hormone's impact on the health of cows and consumers, builds on policies of the two foodservice management divisions of UK-based Compass Group to purchase only hormone-free milk.

The Food and Drug Administration approved the use of rBGH, a genetically engineered drug injected into cows to increase milk production, in 1993. Controversy over its side effects to the animals and humans led most industrialized nations, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, as well as the 27 countries in the European Union, to ban the hormone.
Compass Group and Bon Appetit have several other policies that protect animal welfare, including the exclusive use of cage-free eggs and sustainable seafood. Most recently, Compass and the Humane Society launched the "Be a Flexitarian" initiative, which encourages the consumption of meatless meals.
