TAUNTON, MA -- MooBella Inc. has installed its novel Ice Creamery systems in five New England institutions of higher learning, nine hospitals and the Boston Aquarium. The Ice Creamery is a fully automated, self-service ice cream portion dispenser that offers the patron a choice of two varieties, 12 flavors and three mix-ins to create any of 96 selections.

Northeastern University, Massachusetts College of Art, Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Salem State College, all in Massachusetts, are among the first to offer MooBella ice cream, which is made-to-order by consumers in 40 seconds. An Ice Creamery has been placed at University of Rhode Island, and a sixth one is slated to debut at Johnson and Wales, also in Rhode Island, in the near future.

According to the manufacturer, schools have indicated that they choose MooBella because it's certified kosher, trans fat- and rGBH-free, and contains 1/3 less fat than leading "super-premium" brands. MooBella premium is said to be 90% fat-free and to provide only 230 calories per 4.5-oz. scoop. The company's light ice cream offering is 95% fat-free and delivers only 200 calories per 4.5-oz. scoop.

The novel system also has been installed at Boston Medical Center, UMass Medical Center (Worcester), North Shore Medical Center (Salem, MA), South Shore Medical Center (South Weymouth, MA), Metrowest Medical Center (Framingham, MA), St. Vincent Hospital (Worcester), Rhode Island Hospital (Providence), Yale University Hospital (New Haven, CT) and Lawrence and Memorial Hospital (New London, CT).

The Ice Creamery's multi-patented design permits nearly instantaneous aeration and freezing of 100% natural dairy ingredients and appealing flavorings. The patron uses a touchscreen interface to specify each of the three components of the finished delicacy, which is prepared quickly and delivered automatically.

New England Aquarium in Boston received its first Ice Creamery late in April, just in time for school vacation. One of Boston's most popular cultural and educational destinations, the aquarium attracts more than one million visitors annually.

Eric Rivers, director of foodservice at the aquarium, said he chose MooBella because it offers a wide variety of high-quality options in a small space (10 sq.ft.), and its interactive controls make it easy to use.

"Our cafe customers love that we can now offer great-tasting ice cream that contains significantly less fat and calories than other super premium brands," Rivers explained. "For me, the fact that the Ice Creamery is compact, easy for consumers to use and for my staff to clean and maintain is a huge selling point. And it's fun! Kids and adults have a blast creating their own combinations, using the touch screen and following along as graphics depict the ice cream-making process in real time."

MooBella Inc. has received the INNY Award from the San Jose, CA-based Tech Museum of Innovation, the 2006 Kitchen Innovations award from the National Restaurant Association and the first annual Food Network Award, presented by the popular television specialty channel.
