TOKYO -- Namco Bandai said profits for the three-month period, ended June 30, rose 8% to $694.8 million based on higher global videogame sales. Net sales for Namco's first quarter rose 7.7% to $1.14 billion, yielding profits of $42.1 million. | SEE RELEASE

Consumer videogame sales led the entertainment company's positive performance with 3.3 million new retail game units sold. Arcade revenues were flat at $190.5 million for the quarter, but Namco said Japanese same-store sales rose 7.9% compared with the same period last year.

Namco ended the quarter with 288 arcades worldwide: 217 in Japan, 29 in the U.S., 12 in Europe and 10 in other Asian nations. In 2009, Namco owned 293 arcades in Japan and 88 in the U.S.
