SACRAMENTO, CA -- California lawmakers have introduced a measure that would prohibit offering cash or items exchangeable for cash in amusement games. The bill (AB1103) was sought by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, according to Bob Snyder of Bob Snyder and Associates Inc.

Snyder indicated that a "no cash prize" law would be good for the vast majority of California's operators, except those few who engage in the practice of attaching cash to playfield toys, or flaunting wrapped and weighted currency on pusher games. Both acts have drawn increased attention to merchandisers and, subsequently, increased enforcement on them.

That said, the amended language to California's penal code related to gaming will not impact the legal status of amusement games for prizes. "There is no prize value language within the bill," Snyder explained.

"I believe this is a bill the entire amusement industry should back," Snyder told Vending Times. "It would add credibility to the majority of operators if they did."
