CENTENNIAL, CO -- Vend product distribution titan Vistar said it is acquiring Liberty Distribution Co. LLC. The transaction is expected to close by the end of June.
Founded in 1998, Liberty distributes candy and snacks to national and regional retail establishments. The company is based in Chandler, AZ, with additional locations in Mechanicsburg, PA, and Memphis, TN. It employs 150 people at its three locations.
Vistar president and chief executive Patrick Hagerty said Liberty is a pioneer in marketing and delivering candy and snacks to retailers that carry only nonperishable food products. "This [nonperishable] category is now commonplace in retail industries where it was virtually unknown just 15 years ago," he said.
Liberty will remain a standalone company led by Robert Armstrong, who is its present chief operating officer; he will become president at the close of the transaction. Liberty founder Jim Schweikert will retire, but will lend his expertise in an advisory capacity.
Vistar belongs to the Performance Food Group Co., which is also parent to Performance Foodservice and PFG Customized Distribution.
Earlier this month, PFG acquired North Carolina's Institution Food House. | SEE STORY
