BOSTON -- City employees and visitors to government agencies may no longer be able to buy soft drinks at vending machines on city property if Boston health officials have their way.

A panel of health, education and housing leaders has reportedly convened to draft a policy that would restrict the sales of sugar-sweetened beverages on city property, according to the Boston Globe.

Boston was among the first cities to ban smoking in restaurants and bars and prohibit trans fat in restaurants. It recently received a $12 million federal grant to take "concrete" steps to fight obesity.
