Paul Simpson Gies LEWISTOWN, MT -- Paul Simpson Gies, a former director of the Amusement and Music Operators Association, died on Jan. 16 at the Central Montana Medical Center here. He was 51.

His death was reported in AMOA's Off the Top news bulletin. The cause of death, AMOA said, was cancer.

Gies was born in Lewistown on Dec. 18, 1962. He served in the U.S. Army from 1983 to 1985, and after completing his service he attended the University of Montana and Notre Dame. He ran his own painting company, worked in a local tavern and later operated his own vending company, Gies Distributing/Native Son Amusements.

Active in business affairs and in his community, Gies served on the executive board of the Montana Tavern Association and belonged to the Montana Coin Machine Operators Association, serving as president for a period. The coin-op industry veteran served on the AMOA board of directors in 2006-'07. He also was a member of the American Legion, Eagles Club and the Moose Lodge.

He is survived by two children, Jonathan Gies and Dakota Glidewell, both of Lewistown, along with his parents, brother, sister and grandmother.
