UPDATE -- 12:15 p.m. -- Friday -- The fire in Seaside Heights had been contained this morning, but some firefighters remain on the scene battling hot spots. The fire destroyed eight blocks of boardwalk and more than 30 businesses in the Jersey Shore town ravaged by Superstorm Sandy almost a year ago. Reportedly among the business casualties is an arcade operated by John Maurer and Gary Balaban, owners of Coast to Coast Entertainment. Gov. Chris Christie held a news conference Friday morning, during which he said the fire is 95% contained and only a few minor injuries were reported. Christie said firefighters got the blaze under control around 11 p.m., roughly nine hours after it started. The effort was aided by heavy rain off the coast just before 6 a.m.

SEASIDE PARK, NJ -- A massive six-alarm fire broke out today on the boardwalk at Seaside Park at approximately 2:30 p.m. The blaze, which is believed to have started at Kohr’s Frozen Custard Shop at 301 Boardwalk, quickly spread and engulfed several buildings in the vicinity, including the FunTown Pier.

According to local news reports, construction crews have been called to the scene of the fire, which neighbors Seaside Heights, to remove sections of the newly installed boardwalk to create a “fire break.” Several firefighters and residents were being treated for smoke inhalation.

"Pictures and video of the fire are startling and sad given what Seaside Park and neighboring Seaside Heights have endured with Superstorm Sandy," said Michael Drewniak, a spokesman for the governor's office.

Seaside Park mayor Robert Matthies added, "This is another tremendous wrench in the recovery."
