VIRGINIA BEACH, VA -- The hotel and motel association here is lobbying the City Council to ask the state's General Assembly to permit video poker locally.

The Virginia Beach Hotel Motel Association argues that video poker is a skill-based game permitted under state gambling laws and that poker machines would boost tourism. Officials appear ready to give the idea a fair hearing, according to local press outlets.

Association president Verne Burlage called the effort "a big uphill battle." Councilmember John Uhrin urged his colleagues to consider the idea.
