TOKYO -- Coca-Cola (Japan) Co. Ltd. and Fuji Electric Retail Systems Co. Ltd. have developed a new vending machine that can keep beverages cold without using power for up to 16 hours a day.

Called the A011 Peak Shift, the beverage vender shifts use of power for cooling from the usual peak midday period to the nighttime, when there is reduced power capacity.

All products in the machine are cooled at night, so the rise in cabinet temperature is limited even after cooling has been stopped for a long period of time. In addition, the machine's vacuum insulation materials reduce the impact of the outside temperature and airtight doors prevent cold air from escaping.

"With these efforts, we are able to respond to government requests to save energy and to provide cold products," said Coca-Cola Japan.

Coca-Cola will test the machine for two months, starting in July, on locations in Saitama Prefecture's Kumagaya City and Gifu Prefecture's Tajimi City. After gauging its performance, the beverage giant plans to work to extend the amount of time the machine can go without using power for cooling during hours when energy generally is short supply.

Coca-Cola has focused on more energy-efficient vending machines in Japan since the 2011 earthquake that hit the country's northeast regions. | SEE STORY
