Retail optimization platform will help Smith's Snackvend better manage 9,000+ locations

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cantaloupe Systems reports that PepsiCo Vending subsidiary Smith's Snackvend of Chatswood, Australia, has chosen the Cantaloupe Retail Optimization Platform for installation in 9,100 vending locations across Australia.

The objective is to increase revenue through enhancing selectivity and customer service, improving route efficiency, and reducing product spoilage and out-of-stocks.

Smith said it chose Cantaloupe Systems from a field of five competitors. Cantaloupe technology provides a real-time view versus retrospectives, said Inis Shepherd, national vending manager of Smith's Snackvend.

"Cantaloupe Systems' proven monitoring, business intelligence and analytics technology enables us to track sales patterns and inventory levels instantaneously, and then provides the best path for process optimization, allowing our contract service providers to deliver the right products to the right machines at the right time," Shepherd said.

"Drivers earn more because CROP results in higher delivery efficiencies, and they use less fuel by serving machines only when needed," Shepherd added. "Consumers benefit from a broader and fresher product selection and fewer stockouts. Once Australia's national privacy legislation is strengthened, we're looking forward to giving consumers the added benefit of Cantaloupe Systems' Seed Cashless for credit and debit card transactions."

The Cantaloupe platform combines real-time, Web-based wireless monitoring, business intelligence and analytics, and retail best-practice support to automate vending scheduling, route order prekitting, merchandising and cashless processes.

The combination of monitoring and business intelligence is designed to advance vending from a guess-based industry to one that is fact-based. Increasing operators' abilities to deliver services driven by actual consumer demands that are tracked in real time could help achieve this.

Smith's Snackvend claims its initial tests of CROP resulted in an 80% reduction in coin variance, a 94% lower spoilage rate and 50% fewer sold-out conditions through improved prekitting and scheduling. The vendor also expects to reduce its overall carbon footprint through the elimination of 48 delivery vans -- and since trucks carry less merchandise, they will consume less fuel.

Cantaloupe Systems was founded 10 years ago by Mandeep Arora and Anant Agrawal with $60,000 in student loans and their own savings. They have since raised $17 million from private investors. Today, the San Francisco company's Seed devices track about 65,000 machines. Cantaloupe reports that operators using the Seed solution can average $35,000 in annual savings a route, replenish 80% more machines per week, and reduce their carbon footprints by 40% by eliminating unnecessary travel and carrying smaller loads.

"Smiths likes to be known as 'Australia's and New Zealand's fastest growing and favorite convenience food and beverage company,'" Arora said, "and I believe the partnership with Cantaloupe Systems will confirm that distinction."

Smith's Snackvend Co., a subsidiary of PepsiCo, is the largest vending operator in Australia, employing 2,100 Australians in the manufacture and distribution of its snack products.
