BRAZORIA COUNTY, TX -- About 70% of Chuck E. Cheese's restaurants nationwide have liquor licenses, but some parents here are challenging the license application recently filed by a local CEC store, said local press outlets. | SEE STORY
Wendy Heath said she is concerned about the possibility of drinking and driving, as well as the tendency of alcohol to fuel altercations. Like many ballparks, the CEC chain has seen its share of fights in recent years.
CEC spokeperson Brenda Holloway defended the company's policy. "A lot of parents appreciate the opportunity to have an adult beverage," she said, "so we just like to give them that choice."
CEC said that some of the highly publicized incidents in their stores in recent years were not alcohol-related.
Public objections to alcohol sales are not unusual in Texas and other states. In Texas and 23 other states there are still "dry" counties in which liquor, either for on-premise consumption or at retail, cannot be sold. Many of these bans date back to the 1930s post-Prohibition era.
