CHICAGO -- A highlight of the upcoming National Automatic Merchandising Association CoffeeShow 2010 will be an in-depth presentation on coffee brewing fundamentals led by Mike Tompkins of Coffee Products Associates (Bloomingdale, IL). It's one of the two segments of NAMA's updated Quality Coffee Certification Program, developed to equip operators with the product knowledge they need to address the demands of today's quality-conscious workplace patrons.

CoffeeShow 2010 is set for Bally's Resort in Las Vegas from Oct. 20 through 22. The new Brewing Fundamentals workshop will be offered from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 20.

Tompkins, an 18-year coffee industry veteran who has conducted QCCP courses for a decade, will provide detailed information on the effect of coffee-to-water ratio and grind (particle size) on flavor development, as well as other factors affecting the quality of the finished cup, in relation to the different systems available for brewing coffee.

NAMA vice-president of sales and service Dean Gilland observed that operators who attend this session will learn how to identify and resolve common quality issues affecting quality. "We will also teach them how to sell quality and not price," Gilland emphasized. "Sales staff, sales managers, customer service staff, service technicians and route drivers can all profit from learning how to prepare an exceptional cup of coffee."

CoffeeShow 2010 is building on NAMA's well-attended Coffee Summits, and expands this year into a major coffee, tea and water forum and showcase.

Both segments of the new QCCP (the other one is titled Coffee Fundamentals, and deals with coffee's origin, processing, grading and specification) will be offered in conjunction with next spring's NAMA OneShow in Chicago. The program is scheduled for April 27.
