TAIPEI, Taiwan – Beginning in March, beverage vending machines in Taiwan are required to have a container collection receptacle in close proximity.
Taiwan's Environmental Protection Administration has revised its regulations to require companies operating vending machines in public places to install recycling bins within 50 meters (165 ft.) of each machine.
Violators will be punished with fines of between NT$60,000 and NT$300,000 ($2,000 to $10,000), according to the EPA.
The agency said the new rule is designed to plug a loophole in existing waste recycling regulations that require shopping malls and chain stores to recycle waste containers and batteries.
Additionally, beginning May 1, chain beverage stores will be required to install recycling bins for disposal of paper and plastic cups.
