DEROSE NAMED CHAIRMAN OF GLOBAL VR
SAN JOSE, CA - Global VR president and chief executive Jim DeRose has been installed as the video game company's chairman of the board, it was announced yesterday. DeRose joined the company last April following 30-plus years of top corporate leadership at Acclaim Entertainment, PDI/Dreamworks, Mattel USA and the Hanes Division of Sara Lee Corp. In just five months he has helped GVR "regain momentum," said Patrick Imeson, managing director of Calim Private Equity, a leading GVR investor. DeRose succeeds company founder, and previous chairman, Milind Bharvirkar, who no longer has an active role in the company and is presently pursuing other business interests, according to the company. Last weekend GVR hosted dozens of players to a $100,000 championship tournament on "EA Sports Madden Football" at the Alexis Hotel and Resort in Las Vegas. The company plans to launch monthly cash tournaments on its "EA Sports PGA Tour Golf , Challenge Edition" video game later this year. PLAYBOY TO ENTER LBE BUSINESS, SAYS CHRISTIE HEFNER
CHICAGO , Playboy Enterprises Inc. has been associated with the amusement machine industry chiefly as a high-profile licensed property for pinball machines made by Data East and more recently, Stern Pinball. PEI chairman and CEO Christie Hefner recently told Forbes: "We're getting ready to try location-based entertainment. We'll combine dining, gaming and entertainment to bring the brand to life in new Playboy Clubs that we plan to open next year in Las Vegas and Shanghai." Presumably in this case "gaming" means slot machines, although observers wager that some "Playboy" pins may find their way into the new generation of Bunny clubs as well.
LOUISIANA STATE SENATOR CALLS FOR VIOLENT VIDEO GAME BAN
DRY CREEK, LA,State Sen. James David Cain (R) plans to introduce a bill to ban the sale of violent and sexually explicit (home) video games to minors in the next regular session of the Louisiana State Legislature. Cain said he is motivated by the Entertainment Software Rating Board's recent decision to reclassify the video game "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" to "AO" for "adults only" (18 years or older). In a now-familiar pattern, Cain's bill would criminalize the sale of violent or sexually explicit home video games to anyone under 18. At press time it remains unclear if rentals and, by extension, coin-operated games would fall under the bill.
