The survey found consumers’ desire to use credit and debit cards for small payments and micropayments, at the point of sale and online, is increasing steadily. An estimated 45 million Americans now are prepared to use credit or debit cards for purchases of $5 or less, up 23% from September 2004.

The policy statement came in a Nov. 22 letter to the Amusement and Music Operators Association.
| | Dave & Buster’s Reaps Benefits Of McDonald’s-Style Strategy Marcus Webb DALLAS — Dave & Buster’s Inc. is combating the effects of high gas prices and tougher entertainment competition with two new marketing strategies that were partly inspired by successful McDonald’s promotions. According to Corey Haynes, D&B’s vice-president of amusements, the company’s new price-value promotions are driving traffic and boosting sales significantly.
| | St. Paddy’s Day Will Theme ASI’s Return To Chicago: March 16-18 Marcus Webb CHICAGO — Hailing Chicago as “one of the world’s best party cities,” leaders of the American Amusement Machine Association say the amusements industry will find a pot of gold at the 2006 edition of the Amusement Showcase International. The city’s famed St. Paddy’s parade begins at 11:00 AM on Saturday, Mar. 11, kicking off an entire week of Irish-themed celebrations. The ASI show, slated for March 16 through 18 at the city’s Hyatt Regency, will feature many holiday-themed events. “We’re very excited to have the show over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend,” said officials.
| | TouchTunes Stock Split Will Privatize Firm; Allegro Bows At Open House Marcus Webb LAKE ZURICH, IL — TouchTunes Music Corp. saw shareholders approve a stock split that took the company private at the annual meeting here on Dec. 1, 2005. Officials said shareholders approved “a going private transaction by means of a 1-to-2,000 reverse stock split of the class A voting common stock of the company.” At press time, TouchTunes said it intended to cause the reverse stock split to become effective as soon as practicable, not later than Dec. 31. The company also unveiled its latest jukebox design.
| | Al “The Peanut Man” Expands Bulk Route’s Potential In His New Distribution Venture Hank Schlesinger NEW YORK CITY — Al Swiderski, best known as Al “the peanut man,” is launching a new company to expand his service expertise beyond traditional bulk vending. The New York-based operator, who claims to have previously built a route that grossed more than a $1 million, advises operators to look for value in their routes outside of bulk vending. Specifically, said Swiderski, there is real, added value in bulk vending routes as a distribution channel for other, non-vended products.

For generations, they have been synonymous with bulk vending. After all, the general public doesn’t call bulk venders “gumball machines” for nothing. Gumballs are simple, familiar and ubiquitous. Even among some bulk vending operators, the attitude seems to be that if you’ve seen one gumball, you’ve seen them all. But that attitude is changing. As overhead in the industry continues to steadily rise and profit margins shrink, operators and manufacturers are taking a second look at the spherical confections.
| | New Charity Vending Program Assists Disabled Police Officers Hank Schlesinger PERALTA, NM — A detective sergeant here has teamed up with the Washington state-based charity, Officer Needs Assistance Fund, to create a vending outreach program. Sergeant Paul Szych, who is both a law enforcement officer and a bulk vending operator, saw a need to help police officers disabled in the line of duty and formed the Officer Needs Assistance Vending Outreach Program.
