DENVER -- The Colorado state Senate has approved a bill that would ban trans fats in products sold through school vending machines and a la carte food sold in cafeterias.

Food sold at fundraisers, bake sales and sporting event concessions would be exempt from the ban, which would take effect in fall 2013. Supporters of the bill, which passed 18-17, blocked an amendment to the proposed legislation that would exempt districts with fewer than 1,000 students from complying with the rules.

The bill (SB68) is sponsored by House Education Chairman Tom Massey (R-Poncha Springs) and Sen. Lucia Guzman (D-Denver). In February, a Senate committee approved a revision of the original sweeping proposal to be less restrictive. | SEE STORY

The bill is on its way to Colorado's House.
